A community leader in Kano, Chief Uche Magwan has advised the federal government to look into the high level of corruption trailing the post JAMB examination exercise in some of the nation's universities.
He made the appeal in a chart with Saturday Independent in Kano.
Chief Magwan noted with concern that fees ranging from N50, 000 to N100, 000 that were been demanded by some universities from desperate candidates for the purpose of offering them admission.
This he added was a bad development in the country's university system.
"We all agree that there should be practical efforts to improve our university educational system but such effort should be thorough, transparent and devoid of questionable tendencies".
In his words, the federal government and other relevant agencies as well as stakeholders in the educational sector should as a matter of urgency, put an end to this disgraceful act going on in the country's universities.
' They are capable of derailing the already decaying university education in the country", he said.
He noted with concern, the discriminatory fees charge by some of the universities for indigenes and non-indigenes and said it would not help our education system.
Chief Magwan said there has been reports that some universities turn back candidates who did not made their institution their first choice irrespective of the mark scored in JAMB and cited university of Jos as one of such universities guilty of such offence.
"Some of the candidates for University of Jos were denied the post JAMB examination except the indigenes. This is a sad development as it questions our claims to one Nigeria. If you are to be denied admission, let it be on the basis of your academic deficiency and not your ethnic background, the government should do something about it" he said
